bio
Born in New York City in 1944 and living and working at the Chelsea Hotel during the late sixties through the seventies, Kerner emerged out of the explosive art movement that defined his generation.
His influences at the time were transcultural and deeply touched by his many trips to Oaxaca, Mexico. Through intense painting sessions in the early nineties, he developed and explored a new technique of painting using a series of multiple paint and oil wash applications . . . then, combined with solvents and varnishes, he would randomly loosen with pressured water the previously applied layers of paint, creating a subtle, translucent and highly textured, carved surface.
He received the optimal grant for painting from NEA, and through the years his work has been widely collected by museums and private collections around the world.
